Competitions and collaboration projects

The post title says it all. I'm a 3dsMax user with experience in architectural modeling and rendering but I'd like to start aiming towards animation, namely special effects animation. Would be cool to get some practice in this area working on some challanges or community projects.
Any thoughts anyone?

That sounds like a very good idea, with regards competitions we'd have to look into getting some form of sponsorship for prizes of come sorts, any suggestions (perhaps those guys who market Autodesk in Ireland)

There's no reason why collaborative projects wouldn't work, hopefully as time goes by we'll get a sense of what kind of projects that people would be interested in,

A weekly competition would be a nice idea. A theme is selected every week, and artists can use any tool they want to create a work around that theme. A voting poll can then be used to select the winner. No need for prizes.

There are plenty of these in the web already, but an Irish based one would be interesting.
